Baked Pierogi & Kielbasa Casserole

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Sauté the Base

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the sliced kielbasa until it develops a nice sear on both sides. Remove the sausage and use the remaining fat in the pan to sauté the onions until they are soft and translucent, adding the garlic for the final 30 seconds.

2. Assemble the Dish

Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Place the frozen pierogies in the dish and toss them with the browned sausage and sautéed onions. Spread the mixture out so the pierogies are mostly in a single layer to ensure even cooking.

3. Add the Liquid

Whisk together the chicken broth and heavy cream in a small bowl, then pour it over the pierogies. This liquid is the secret to the dish—it prevents the dumplings from drying out and creates a light, savory gravy at the bottom of the pan.

4. The First Bake

Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes. This stage allows the frozen pierogies to steam through to the center.

5. The Melty Finish

Remove the foil and sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top. Return the dish to the oven, uncovered, for another 10–15 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and the pierogies are slightly golden.

Serving and Variations

This casserole is a complete, hearty meal on its own, but it pairs wonderfully with a side of sauerkraut or a crisp green salad to cut through the richness of the cream and cheese.

For an extra layer of texture, you can try adding:

  • Crispy Bacon: Stir in crumbled bacon with the cheese for more smoky depth.

  • A Toasted Crunch: Toss panko breadcrumbs with a little melted butter and sprinkle them over the cheese before the final bake.

  • Sweet Peppers: Sauté sliced bell peppers with the onions for a sweeter, colorful twist
