Dolly Parton’s 5-Ingredient Cheesy Casserole That Tastes Like a Tennessee Memory
There are certain meals that stick with you long after the plates are cleared. A trip to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee has a way of doing that — the mountain air, the music, the food that somehow tastes better because of where you’re eating it. For a lot of families, Dolly’s Stampede is one of those places. The show, the energy, the dinner — it all becomes part of a memory you carry home with you.
That kind of food nostalgia is powerful. It’s the reason people hunt down cookbooks, recreate recipes in their own kitchens, and end up with something that brings the whole table to a happy standstill. This casserole — creamy, golden-topped, bubbling at the edges — is exactly that kind of dish. Just five ingredients, no chopping, no complicated steps, and the result looks and tastes like something that took real effort. It’s been making rounds at family dinners and holiday tables, and once you try it, you’ll completely understand why.
Ingredients
- 1 bag (30 oz) frozen shredded hash browns, thawed
- 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of chicken soup
- 2 cups sour cream
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided
- 1/2 cup butter, melted
Method
- Preheat your oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish or a large oval casserole dish.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the thawed hash browns, cream of chicken soup, sour cream, 1 and 1/2 cups of the shredded cheddar cheese, and the melted butter. Stir everything together until well combined.
- Pour the mixture into your prepared baking dish and spread it out into an even layer.
- Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top of the casserole.
- Bake uncovered for 45 to 55 minutes, until the top is deeply golden brown and the edges are bubbling. The top should have that gorgeous, caramelized crust you see in the photo — don’t pull it out too early.
- Let the casserole rest for about 5 minutes before serving so it sets up nicely and is easier to scoop.
A Few Notes Worth Sharing
Make sure your hash browns are fully thawed before mixing — frozen hash browns will release too much water and make the casserole runny. Spreading them out on paper towels for a few minutes after thawing doesn’t hurt either.
If you want even more of that beautiful golden crust on top, switch the oven to broil for the last 2 to 3 minutes of baking. Keep a close eye on it though — it goes from perfect to overdone quickly under the broiler.
This casserole is a dream make-ahead dish. Assemble it the night before, cover it tightly, and refrigerate it. Pull it out about 20 minutes before baking to take the chill off, then bake as directed. It’s one of those recipes that genuinely gets better the second day, if you’re lucky enough to have leftovers.
What to Serve It With
This casserole holds its own as a hearty side dish alongside roasted chicken, glazed ham, or pulled pork. It also works beautifully as a brunch centerpiece paired with scrambled eggs and fresh fruit. However you serve it, expect people to ask for the recipe before they’ve even finished their first helping.
