The 4-Ingredient Ham and Cheese Puff Pastry Rolls That Empty Every Platter
Some recipes are so good they outlive the eras that created them. This one came out of a 1959 church cookbook, and it became the undisputed centerpiece of every costume party for three decades running. Four humble ingredients. One irresistible bite. The kind of appetizer that makes guests think you spent hours in the kitchen when really you were in the living room the whole time.
Golden, flaky, and packed with savory ham tucked inside buttery puff pastry, these little rolls have a magnetic pull. Set them on a table and watch them vanish before anyone even finds a seat. Whether you’re hosting a holiday gathering, a game-day spread, or a casual get-together, this vintage gem belongs in your rotation.
Why This Recipe Has Lasted Over 60 Years
There’s a reason church cookbook recipes tend to stick around. They were written by home cooks who understood that flavor and simplicity go hand in hand. This one asks nothing complicated of you. No fancy techniques, no hard-to-find ingredients, no special equipment. Just a short list of pantry staples and an oven that knows what it’s doing.
Ingredients
- 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
- 1 cup diced ham (about 6 ounces, finely chopped)
- 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
- 1 teaspoon black pepper (freshly ground for best flavor)
Method
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Lightly flour a clean work surface and unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet. Gently roll it out slightly to smooth any creases.
- Spread the softened cream cheese evenly across the entire surface of the pastry, leaving about a half inch of bare edge along one of the long sides.
- Scatter the diced ham evenly over the cream cheese layer, then finish with a generous grind of black pepper across the top.
- Starting from the long side opposite the bare edge, roll the pastry tightly into a log, pressing gently as you go to keep the filling snug inside.
- Using a sharp knife, slice the log into rounds about three-quarters of an inch thick. You should get approximately 16 to 20 pieces depending on the size of your pastry sheet.
- Arrange the rolls cut-side up on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about an inch apart so the heat can circulate around them.
- Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, or until the pastry is deeply golden and the layers have puffed up beautifully. The edges should look crisp and the tops lightly caramelized.
- Allow to cool for 5 minutes before transferring to a serving platter. They are best enjoyed warm but disappear just as fast at room temperature.
Tips for the Best Results
Make sure your puff pastry is fully thawed but still cold when you work with it. Warm pastry becomes sticky and difficult to roll cleanly. If it starts to feel too soft, pop it back in the refrigerator for ten minutes before continuing.
Chilling the assembled log for 15 minutes before slicing makes cutting much cleaner and keeps the rounds from losing their shape in the oven. This small extra step makes a noticeable difference in the finished look.
For a little extra color and shine, brush the tops of the rolls with a simple egg wash before baking. It gives them that gorgeous deep amber finish you see on bakery-style pastries.
Make-Ahead and Storage
These rolls can be assembled the night before and stored unsliced in the refrigerator, wrapped tightly in plastic wrap. Slice and bake straight from the fridge the next day. Leftovers, if you ever have them, reheat beautifully in a 350°F oven for about 8 minutes to restore the crispness.
