However, when a weather system shifts or two separate wind patterns collide—often near coastal points, reefs, or where two bodies of water meet—waves begin moving at opposing angles to one another. When these opposing wave systems collide head-on at nearly 90-degree angles, they form sharp, grid-like square shapes across the water’s surface.
