Why Are There Coins Buried in My Snake Plant? The Surprising Reasons Behind This Quirky Tradition

If you’ve ever received a potted plant as a gift and discovered coins tucked into the soil, you’re not alone. It’s a moment that catches most people completely off guard — equal parts confusing and intriguing. So what’s really going on? Is it a quirky gardening trick, a cultural tradition, or something else entirely? Let’s dig into it (pun intended).

Snake plants, also known as Sansevieria or mother-in-law’s tongue, are already considered lucky plants in many cultures. So finding coins nestled in the soil of one isn’t entirely out of left field — there’s actually quite a bit of meaning and history behind the practice.

It’s Rooted in Cultural Tradition and Good Luck

In many Asian cultures, particularly in Chinese and Filipino traditions, burying coins in the soil of a houseplant is a symbolic gesture meant to attract wealth, prosperity, and good fortune to the new homeowner. It’s a thoughtful way of blessing a new home — essentially planting the seeds of abundance, quite literally. When someone gives you a plant with coins buried inside, they’re wishing you a financially prosperous life in your new space.

Does It Actually Help the Plant in Any Way?

From a purely horticultural standpoint, coins don’t offer any nutritional benefit to the plant. Modern coins are typically made from zinc, copper, or nickel alloys, and while copper does have some natural antifungal properties, the amount present in a coin is far too minimal to make any measurable difference to your snake plant’s health.

That said, they won’t hurt the plant either — especially if they’re just sitting in the soil rather than decomposing rapidly. So while the coins aren’t feeding your snake plant, they’re not harming it. You can leave them in or take them out when you repot without worrying either way.
