Millfield was the kind of town where everyone knew the rhythm of their neighbor’s day. A strange car after 10:00 PM was a topic of conversation; a body on Old Ridge Road was an earthquake.
Before noon, news had trickled down to the diner on Main Street. The girl was identified by late afternoon—not by a driver’s license, but by the local librarian who recognized the handmade silver thumb ring. Her name was Clara Vance, a quiet archivist who had moved to the edge of town six months prior to transcribe the county’s historical land deeds. She kept to herself, spent her evenings at the library, and walked to the market every Thursday.
She was someone who existed softly in the margins of the town. Yet here she was, at the center of its darkest mystery.
The Clues in the Grass
Officer Hale returned to the site late that evening as the sun dipped behind the pines. The yellow police tape fluttered gently in the rising wind.
He crossed the road, standing where Evelyn had stood early that morning, looking across to the ditch. Why Old Ridge Road? It was a thoroughfare to nowhere—it led to the abandoned quarry and three dead-end county routes. Anyone coming out here had a reason to be here.
Hale walked down into the embankment, shining his flashlight into the milkweed. A few feet from where Clara had been found, half-hidden under a cluster of wet leaves, his beam struck something bright.
It was a small, leather-bound notebook, its pages swollen with moisture.
He didn’t open it—it belonged in evidence—but as he lifted it carefully into an envelope, the cover parted just enough for him to see Clara’s delicate handwriting on the first page:
