I recently learned that you should NEVER hang your tea towels on the oven door handle. I’ve never thought of this before. Here’s why!!!

It is one of those unwritten laws of home decor that almost everyone follows without a second thought. You buy a cute, seasonal tea towel, fold it neatly into thirds, and drape it over the handle of your oven door. It looks charming, it’s right at waist height, and it’s incredibly convenient when you need to dry your hands in a hurry.

But according to appliance repair technicians, firefighters, and food safety experts, this ubiquitous kitchen habit is actually a major mistake.

If you currently have a dish towel hanging from your oven handle right now, here is exactly why you need to move it immediately.

1. It Creates a Stealth Fire Hazard

The most immediate danger is the proximity to intense heat. While a modern oven door is insulated, the top of the door—right where the handle connects—is often where the appliance vents its excess heat.

If you are baking at high temperatures or using the broiler, that handle can become incredibly hot. Over time, constant exposure to this dry, escaping heat can dry out the fabric fibers of your towel, lowering its ignition point.

Furthermore, if you have a towel hanging down, it is surprisingly easy for the fabric to get caught when you close the door, pushing a corner of the towel directly inside the oven cavity next to the heating elements. If you use a gas range, a long towel dangling down can easily catch a draft and sway into the path of an open flame while you are cooking on the stovetop.

2. It Breeds a Germ Fortress (Cross-Contamination)

From a food safety perspective, the oven door handle is one of the most high-traffic, bacteria-laden surfaces in the entire house. Think about your cooking routine: you handle raw chicken or crack eggs, and then you immediately grab the oven handle to open the door.

When you hang a tea towel over that same handle, the fabric acts like a sponge, soaking up whatever bacteria was left behind on the metal bar. Worse yet, because the oven vents warm air downward, the towel is constantly kept in a warm, slightly damp environment—the absolute perfect breeding ground for Salmonella, E. coli, and Campylobacter.

Every time you wipe your “clean” hands or dishes with that towel, you are likely spreading bacteria right back onto your food-prep surfaces.

3. It Can Ruin Your Oven Door
