Easy Flaky Cherry Danishes

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Assemble and Bake

Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C) and line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.

1. Whip the Cream Cheese Filling

In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract. Use an electric hand mixer to beat the mixture on medium-high speed until it is completely smooth, creamy, and free of lumps.

2. Cut the Pastry Squares

Unroll your thawed puff pastry sheets onto a lightly floured surface. Using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter, cut each sheet into four equal squares (giving you eight total squares). Place the pastry squares onto your prepared baking sheets, leaving about two inches of space between each one.

3. Create the Borders

To ensure your filling stays neatly contained while the pastry puffs up in the oven, use a paring knife to gently score a smaller square about a half-inch from the edge of each pastry piece. Be careful not to cut all the way through the dough!

4. Layer the Fillings

Spoon about one to two tablespoons of the sweet cream cheese mixture directly into the center of each scored square, spreading it out evenly within the border. Top the cream cheese with a generous tablespoon of cherry pie filling, placing 3 to 4 whole cherries right in the center.

5. Brush and Bake

Brush the outer edges of the puff pastry squares with your egg wash. Bake at 400°F for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the edges of the danishes have risen beautifully and turned a deep, golden brown.

The Perfect Finishing Touch

Remove the pastries from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack for about 5 minutes. While they are cooling, whisk your powdered sugar and milk together in a small bowl until it forms a thick, smooth, pourable glaze.

Using a fork or a small spoon, swing your hand back and forth to create elegant, zigzag drizzles of white icing across the warm, red danishes.

Serve them while they are still warm, alongside a steaming cup of dark roast coffee or a cold glass of milk. Any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container and quickly revived the next morning in a toaster oven for 2 to 3 minutes to regain that pristine, buttery crunch
