1. Check the Care Label
Before anything, always inspect the pillow’s care label. Most synthetic, cotton, or down pillows are machine washable, but some specialty materials like memory foam or latex may require spot cleaning or hand washing. Following the manufacturer’s instructions ensures you don’t damage the pillow during cleaning.
2. Pre-Treat Stains
If your pillows have visible stains—yellowish sweat marks or oil spots—pre-treat them before washing. Mix a paste of baking soda and water, or use a gentle laundry detergent directly on the stains. Let it sit for 15–20 minutes. For tougher stains, a few drops of hydrogen peroxide can help brighten whites without harsh chemicals.
3. Machine Wash with Care
Most pillows can be safely washed in a washing machine. Use warm water and a gentle cycle to avoid damaging the filling. For extra freshness, add ½ cup of baking soda or a few drops of mild essential oils, like lavender or eucalyptus, to the wash. To keep pillows balanced in the washer, wash two at a time or add towels as counterweights.
4. Rinse Thoroughly
