The scent of lavender bleach always meant peace to Clara. It was a Saturday morning ritual, an unspoken pact she made with herself to reclaim order from the chaos of the week. She was meticulous—inflexibly so.

“Always dry as you go,” her mother used to say. But today, Clara was in a rush.

She had just finished scrubbing the gleaming Italian porcelain tiles in her second-floor hallway. The floor was a smooth, uninterrupted sea of dark gray slate, gorgeous to look at, but merciless when wet. A thin, shimmering sheen of soapy water still coated the surface.

Just two minutes to air dry, she thought, leaning her mop against the wall. I’ll just grab my phone from the bedroom.

She took one careful step, tests of friction under her bare feet. The first step held.

The second step did not.

It happened without a sound. Her left foot lost all grip on the slick slate, sliding forward like ice on glass. Her body twisted violently in mid-air to compensate.

The sound of her head striking the corner of the hardwood baseboard echoed down the empty stairwell.

Clara lay on her side, pinned against the hallway wall. The impact hadn’t knocked her out; instead, it had ignited a white-hot spark of agony at the base of her neck. She tried to lift her chin, but her body refused the command. Panic, cold and sharp, flooded her chest.

“Help,” she whispered. The word barely scraped out of her throat.

She was alone. Her husband was out of town until Sunday evening. Her phone sat on her nightstand, barely twelve feet away, humming quietly with unread notifications.

Minutes began to bleed into hours. The wet floor beneath her slowly evaporated, cooling her skin until she was shivering violently. Every micro-tremor sent jagged shards of pain radiating down her spine. The angle of her neck trapped a nerve, turning every breath into a slow, searing torture.
