Why You Should Never Put a Tea Towel on the Oven Door

Many of us have the habit of draping a tea towel over the oven door handle for convenience. It seems like a simple and harmless practice, but it can actually pose serious risks. Here’s why you should reconsider this common habit and find a safer alternative.

1. Fire Hazard

One of the biggest dangers of hanging a tea towel on the oven door is the risk of fire. If the towel comes into contact with an open flame, a gas burner, or even an overheated oven surface, it can ignite quickly. Even electric ovens, which may not have an open flame, can produce enough residual heat to cause a tea towel to smolder and catch fire.

2. Risk of Burns and Injuries

A tea towel hanging from the oven door can easily fall onto the floor, creating a slipping hazard. Worse yet, if you accidentally grab the towel while opening the oven, the heat from the door can transfer to your hand, causing burns. Additionally, pulling on the towel could lead to spills or accidents if you have hot trays or pans inside the oven.

3. Poor Air Circulation and Heat Retention

Ovens are designed to vent excess heat, and covering the door with a towel can disrupt this airflow. This may cause the oven to retain more heat than intended, potentially leading to overheating or inefficient cooking performance. Some modern ovens have safety mechanisms that may shut the oven off if airflow is restricted.

4. Bacterial Buildup and Hygiene Issues
