I knew her name long before I ever met her.
She was the one my husband mentioned in passing at first—“She’s just my assistant”—but over time, her name became a constant in our conversations. Meetings ran late because of her. Deadlines were tight because of her. Success at work often seemed tied to her.
And then came the promotion.
They were both up for it.
Same role. Same opportunity. Same boss watching their every move.
That’s when things started to feel… different.
The Growing Tension
I won’t pretend I handled it perfectly. I was jealous.
Not because I didn’t trust my husband—but because I could see how much time they spent together. Early mornings. Late nights. Weekend calls. Inside jokes I didn’t understand. It felt like I was slowly being pushed to the sidelines of my own marriage.
So when he told me he’d be traveling for a week-long business trip—and that she’d be going too—I felt that familiar knot tighten in my chest.

“What hotel are you staying at?” I asked casually.
He hesitated for a second too long.
That’s when I found out the part he wasn’t planning to emphasize: they’d be sharing a room.
