How To Make Homemade German Chocolate Cake:

Preheat Oven: Heat the oven to 375°F. Grease two 8 or 9-inch round baking pans and line the bottoms with wax or parchment paper.

Prepare the Cake Batter:

In a large bowl, combine sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

In a separate bowl, mix eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Add to the dry ingredients and mix.

Stir in boiling water (the batter will be thin) and pour into prepared pans.

Bake for 25–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pans for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Make the German Chocolate Frosting:

In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, granulated sugar, butter, egg yolks, and evaporated milk.

Stir and bring to a low boil over medium heat, continuously stirring until the mixture thickens.

Remove from heat, add vanilla, nuts, and coconut. Cool before layering on the cake.

Prepare the Chocolate Buttercream Frosting:

Melt butter, stir in cocoa powder.

Alternately add powdered sugar and milk, beating until spreading consistency. Adjust with additional milk or powdered sugar as needed. Stir in vanilla.

Assemble the Cake:

Place one cake round on a serving stand or plate.

Spread a thin layer of chocolate frosting, then spoon half of the coconut frosting on top, leaving space at the edges.

Stack the second cake round and cover the entire cake with chocolate frosting.

Spoon the remaining coconut frosting on top.
