Just found out what Kit Kat really stands for! I can’t believe I didn’t know this until today!

When you snap apart a four-finger chocolate bar, the name “Kit Kat” feels modern, snappy, and perfectly corporate. There is a popular, endearing rumor that the candy is an acronym for “Keep In Touch, Kappa Alpha Theta,” supposedly inspired by the inventor’s wife.

However, the real history of the name has absolutely nothing to do with candy, acronyms, or chocolate. To find the true origin of the Kit Kat, you have to travel back more than 300 years to a smoky, 17th-century London pie shop.

The 1690s Political Club

In the late 1690s, a prominent group of Whig political innovators, writers, and cultural minds began gathering regularly at a tavern on Shire Lane in London. This elite inner circle met to discuss politics and literature over hearty meals.

The shop was owned by a pastry chef named Christopher Catling. In 17th-century England, “Kit” was a common nickname for Christopher, and “Cat” was an obvious shortening of his last name. Because the group met at “Kit-Cat’s” shop, the gathering officially became known as the Kit-Cat Club.

The signature dish served at these elite political meetings? A line of individual, savory mutton pies that the patrons affectionately called “kit cats” after their host.

From Mutton Pies to Chocolate Boxes

So, how did a 17th-century meat pie turn into a global confectionery empire? It all comes down to a business strategy by a British candy maker named Joseph Rowntree.

In 1911, Rowntree’s candy company was looking for memorable names to protect for future products. Fascinated by the historical, rhythmic sound of the old London club name, Rowntree officially registered the trademarks for both “Kit Kat” and “Kit Cat”.

For over a decade, the names sat on a shelf unused. In the 1920s, Rowntree briefly rolled out a boxed assortment of chocolates under the “Kit Cat” banner. However, the box didn’t sell well and was quietly discontinued, sending the name back into the vault.
